The European forestry sector is facing many challenges due to climate change, biodiversity loss, increased wood use, and other ecosystem functions. Climate and land use policies are rapidly increasing, while the forest-based value chain covers diverse areas like carbon storage, timber production, and bioenergy. Where do we need to increase resilience from a policy perspective? And how do the current policies relate climate-goals with resilience in the forestry sector?
The paper “Increasing climate-related resilience in the forest-based value chains? A policy perspective“, by RESONATE researchers Alice Ludvig, Blasius Schmid, Barbara Öllerer, Laura Nikinmaa, Pilar Hurtado, Montserrat Rodriguez-Ogea and Anne Toppinen, addresses these questions. Through policy analysis, focus groups, and interviews with European experts, the research finds that while tackling climate change is a priority, the concept of resilience is interpreted differently across policies. The study identifies a divide between environmental and productivity demands, leading to a recommendation for improved communication between departments handling biodiversity and bioeconomy resilience.
